It is my pleasure to welcome you to Seattle Pro Musica’s performances of Shall Not Be Denied. I am always so moved by the Pro Musica concerts I have been fortunate enough to attend, and I was delighted to hear that this fabulous ensemble is performing concerts celebrating a few things very near and dear to my heart, such as the 100th anniversary of the ratification of the Nineteenth Amendment, the immigrant’s journey, and the diversity of musical talent here in the Pacific Northwest. This concert had to be delayed because of COVID but I am so pleased that it will be performed now, and that we still have the opportunity for a beautiful and loving tribute to the movements that bring about justice, the progress that we have made, and the work we have still to do together.
When Congress gave women the right to vote in 1920, it paved a road which made it possible for me to proudly serve you as one of 100+ women, only 89 women of color, and the first South Asian American woman to ever serve in the U.S. House of Representatives. I understand that some of the pieces that will be performed today celebrate America’s long tradition of welcoming immigrants, and that much of the music you will hear was written by women of color. Now, more than ever, we need these voices – these beautiful songs – from those who have too often been left out of all our institutions, including cultural institutions.
I thank you for enriching the lives of your fellow Washingtonians with your vital support of the arts.
I’d also like to congratulate Karen for her leadership and artistry, and her choir for another season of beautiful music and continued success. Your music is a symbol that shows those who would divide us that your gifts SHALL NOT BE DENIED.
Warmly,
Pramila Jayapal
